Brinkworth create a new retail concept for Ben Sherman.

Brinkworth have created a new international retail concept for Ben Sherman,
including standalone stores, mall stores and concessions. The first of this extensive
rollout is situated on London’s Carnaby Street, with a unique, premium boutique
store to follow shortly after on Portobello Road.
Briefed to build on the brands heritage of modernism and to emphasize Ben
Sherman’s authority in shirting, Brinkworth have worked closely with the Ben
Sherman creative team to produce a store concept which references icons of British
design, such as our traditional pubs and the London Underground, to create a fresh
environment and showcase the Ben Sherman collection.
Taking reference from the Victorian warehouses and workspaces around the Ben
Sherman HQ in the EC1 area of London, the Carnaby Street frontage features
striking, teapot brown glazed bricks and utilitarian black and white tiles. The main
feature however, is a dynamic interactive window display, which represents Ben
Sherman’s commitment to the quality of their core product - the shirt. The
pneumatically controlled, moving rail system, selects a specific shirt and enables the
viewer to examine it in detail from all angles. Reeded glass has been used around
the display to offer a diffused view into the store, while creating a window of clear
glass to highlight the rail system.
Internally, the aesthetic continues - concrete flooring is used throughout, with a
reclaimed oak parquet floor used to highlight specific areas. Walls are covered in
authentic glazed Victorian tiles, complete with moulded dado rails, curved corner
pieces, and the iconic teapot brown glazed bricks. This limited material and colour
palette establishes a strong brand character, creating a muted backdrop on which to
display the collection.
At the top of the stairs, a wall created from rolls of original Ben Sherman fabric
behind glass, highlights the heritage of the brand and adds pattern and colour to the
interior. This is repeated around the fitting rooms in the basement, which are
dedicated to displaying formal-wear and utilise the materials and finishes used on the
ground floor.
Taking design cues from British mid-century furniture, the bespoke display units are
traditionally crafted to mirror the detailing in the clothing. Shelving and hanging rails
all provide maximum flexibility for varied lifestyle visual merchandising, while midfloor
pieces create product focus points.
Bespoke architectural light-boxes form a pathway to the rear of the store, where the
main focal area and centrepiece of the store is situated - the Shirt Bar. Dedicated to
shirting and designed as an opportunity for the brand to showcase its breadth of
knowledge in every aspect of shirting, the emphasis is on sales and service, fitting
and care. Comprised of a rich and abundant wall display and an under-lit mid-floor
counter, the Shirt Bar offers the customer an immersive brand experience

Brinkworth Associate Director Murray Aitken says: “we’ve worked closely with the
Ben Sherman team to ensure the depth of product story is conveyed through to their
customer. As well as the great British heritage of the brand, we wanted our scheme
to reflect the time, effort, commitment and detail that is inherent in a Ben Sherman
product. The environment we’ve produced as a result, combines authentic British
materials and references, with clean modern design language that directly reflects,
complements and supports Ben Sherman’s new product ranges”.

Mary Portas and Brinkworth have joined forces to create an

Brinkworth has been commissioned to collaborate with Mary Portas on the
design of her new 1,800 sq ft concession, to be housed on the third floor of
the House of Fraser store on Oxford Street, London.

With Portas and her team of creatives leading the design process, Brinkworth
has jointly responded by creating an unconventional retail concept that
appeals to confident, grown-up women. Realising Portas’s vision, together
the two agencies have created an idiosyncratic retail space, full of
individuality that shows off the thoughtfully sourced product and has a strong
presence on the shop floor.

Unusually for a department store, the windows have been revealed to allow
natural daylight to flood the space, the raw ceiling has been exposed and a
sealed concrete floor laid. In keeping with this classic industrial language,
large Crittall-like windows, made of black drawn steel glazed with a mixture
of obscure and reeded glass are suspended to delineate the perimeters of
the concession and to evoke a gallery space.

To further realise Portas’s concept of a gallery-like space, Brinkworth has
collaborated to create distinct installations within the ‘shop in shop’ that
display the diverse range of designed and curated product that includes
clothing, hosiery, wine, candles, coffee and other carefully sourced
merchandise.

Rachel Bowyer at Brinkworth says: “Mary knows what she wants and is very
open to dialogue – the project has been a collaborative journey that has
allowed Brinkworth to bring creativity and retail expertise to Mary’s vision.”

Portobello Road boutique is the latest, Brinkworth-designed Ben Sherman store to open

The latest, Brinkworth-designed Ben Sherman store to open is sited on London’s Portobello Road. A premium boutique, the new store is the latest in a full concept of international stores, including standalone stores, mall stores and concessions, that Brinkworth has created for the brand.

Building on the brand’s heritage of British modernism, Brinkworth has created a store concept inspired by the recognisably British environments of pubs and tube stations. This translates into a material palette, that will be used throughout the range of stores, inspired by warehouse aesthetics and Victorian working environments - glazed brown bricks, black and white tube station tiles, reeded glass and monochrome mosaic. Furniture and fittings take inspiration from British mid-century domestic furniture.

Briefed to create a refined, creative, store to house Ben Sherman’s premium lines, Plectrum and Modern Classics, Brinkworth have designed the Portobello boutique to relate to, but stand apart from, the brand’s other stores. Almost entirely unbranded, save from a discrete button motif on the glass of the entrance, the boutique employs the same language and approach as the rest of the Ben Sherman outlets, but retains individuality and personality through it’s scale, intimacy and material choices.

To reflect the local area, enhance the air of discretion and add legitimacy to the store, Brinkworth has kept the original shop front. Reminiscent of an antique shop, the traditional Victorian façade is typical of the other shop fronts on Portobello Road. Throughout the store, Brinkworth champion material authenticity, with reeded glass, white tube tiles and architectural light fittings alluding to the material palette of the main brand.

Making the most of the small and awkwardly shaped space, the front area houses the cash desk as well as the Plectrum brand. Clean and simple, the lye washed oak floorboards and low-density product display reference the main concept while grey Valchromat drawers, practical pegboard wall-mounted units and graphic inspired hanging rails are used to display the product.

The rear of the store, which is down a few stairs, is darker and richer, and is reserved for the Modern Classic brand, Ben Sherman’s premium range. The cedar shingles that clad one wall define the area, and contrast with the concrete floor. This area also houses fitting rooms made from grey Valchromat.

Brinkworth Associate Director Murray Aitken says: “We’ve created a unique, boutique shopping experience, that emphasises the premium nature of the brands stocked. It’s clearly born from the same inspiration as the larger brand concept, but has it’s own distinct personality, allowing it to stand alone as an individual store.”

Supreme Opens Its Doors In London

The first European store by legendary New York brand Supreme opened today. The Wilson Brother’s and Brinkworth were appointed to collaborate on the design of the store, which include sculptures by artist Mark Gonzales and a wall of photographs by Ari Marcopoulos.

Supreme’s new retail spot in London has been on everyone’s lips recently, as it’s set to open this Thursday. This launch will be the brand’s first retail venture in Europe, so it’s set to go down a treat on this side of the pond.

The store’s plotted fairly discreetly on 2/3 Peter Street in Soho in the neighbourhood of other fine stores like Tokyo Fixed Gear and Foot Patrol. A minimalistic black shop front and an iconic red box logo. Outside is reflected on the interior’s design — clean and minimal, with custom artworks by Mark Gonzales occupying the space. The store will stock the entire Supreme collection including accessories, skateboard decks and footwear with the bonus of special releases.

Brinkworth Press in Architecture Today

Summer 2010 – London // ‘Many puzzles remain in the work of alteration, as with all works involving translation from one use to another – the cobweb of tension between the new and the existing. One might venture that the assumed affinity between form and function is implicitly denied by the very act of adaptation, but that seems too blunt an assertion; perhaps it is that all such work must assume a mannerism, where meanings are sometimes diverted, inverted, subverted to make a new poetry of the existing. Such is the achievement of the house, reached with intent, subtlety and control.’ – 6 page review written by Professor Fred Scott

PizzaExpress
Graphic Design/Packaging/Design/Art Direction

PizzaExpress are the experts of Gelato, so when they approached Brinkworth to develop their product proposition, authenticity was key. The design needed to be simple and elegant, but above all contemporary, as well as being easily applied to a range of applications such as fridges and packaging.

Brinkworth for Beyond Retro

Beyond Retro
Interior Design/Retail

Quirky vintage clothing specialists, Beyond Retro, always look for locations off the beaten track. Brinkworth created a concept, which would allow them to retain the feel of an independent store, yet give them the ability to roll the store out with ease in other regional locations.

Brinkworth Design News to April 09

http://www.brinkworth.co.uk/press-pr/index.phpCharged with converting the building into an office for digital agency LBi and a workforce of 500 people, Brinkworth was keen to retain the building’s industrial character and honour its legacy as a popular party venue. Wherever possible the building has been left to speak for itself. “I would say my favourite bits are where we’ve done the least and just framed the existing features” says Brinkworth’s associate director Murray Aitken. And anyone who has known and loved the Atlantis Building should appreciate the sentiment.(On-Office Jan 09)

LBi Brinkworth’s design is an intelligent and economical response to a tough building, and one that is full of character and memories. By turning Atlantis into a private office, Londoners have been deprived of one of the East End’s best temporary events spaces. Kevin Brennan (Brinkworth Director) comments that he ‘could not have faced the world if they had wrecked one of his favourite buildings’. He needn’t worry. Brinkworth has drawn out the best of the building, and turned it into an enviable workspace.(Blueprint, Oct 08)
