Portobello Road boutique is the latest, Brinkworth-designed Ben Sherman store to open

The latest, Brinkworth-designed Ben Sherman store to open is sited on London’s Portobello Road. A premium boutique, the new store is the latest in a full concept of international stores, including standalone stores, mall stores and concessions, that Brinkworth has created for the brand.
Building on the brand’s heritage of British modernism, Brinkworth has created a store concept inspired by the recognisably British environments of pubs and tube stations. This translates into a material palette, that will be used throughout the range of stores, inspired by warehouse aesthetics and Victorian working environments - glazed brown bricks, black and white tube station tiles, reeded glass and monochrome mosaic. Furniture and fittings take inspiration from British mid-century domestic furniture.
Briefed to create a refined, creative, store to house Ben Sherman’s premium lines, Plectrum and Modern Classics, Brinkworth have designed the Portobello boutique to relate to, but stand apart from, the brand’s other stores. Almost entirely unbranded, save from a discrete button motif on the glass of the entrance, the boutique employs the same language and approach as the rest of the Ben Sherman outlets, but retains individuality and personality through it’s scale, intimacy and material choices.
To reflect the local area, enhance the air of discretion and add legitimacy to the store, Brinkworth has kept the original shop front. Reminiscent of an antique shop, the traditional Victorian façade is typical of the other shop fronts on Portobello Road. Throughout the store, Brinkworth champion material authenticity, with reeded glass, white tube tiles and architectural light fittings alluding to the material palette of the main brand.
Making the most of the small and awkwardly shaped space, the front area houses the cash desk as well as the Plectrum brand. Clean and simple, the lye washed oak floorboards and low-density product display reference the main concept while grey Valchromat drawers, practical pegboard wall-mounted units and graphic inspired hanging rails are used to display the product.
The rear of the store, which is down a few stairs, is darker and richer, and is reserved for the Modern Classic brand, Ben Sherman’s premium range. The cedar shingles that clad one wall define the area, and contrast with the concrete floor. This area also houses fitting rooms made from grey Valchromat.
Brinkworth Associate Director Murray Aitken says: “We’ve created a unique, boutique shopping experience, that emphasises the premium nature of the brands stocked. It’s clearly born from the same inspiration as the larger brand concept, but has it’s own distinct personality, allowing it to stand alone as an individual store.”
